Glossary

 

Here is an alphabetized list of web development terms that you might find useful. This list is by no means exhaustive and does not seek to establish any type of legal counsel.

Affiliate Programs - Affiliate programs allow you to pay and track incentives to other websites that send you visitors, leads or paying customers. You decide on the incentives you pay.

Audio Streaming - Audio streaming provides your visitors with sound (such as music or speeches,) played through your web browser. Streaming audio begins playing before the entire sound file is downloaded to the web browser. It allows the sound playback to begin almost immediately instead of waiting for the sound file to download to your PC.

Auto Responder - An email address that automatically sends a predetermined email message back to the sender that requested it.

Bandwidth - The amount of data that can be sent through a network connection, measured in bits per second (bps).

Bookmark - A feature in some browsers that allows the browser to remember a web address you visited and makes it easy to return to the bookmarked web page in the future.

Browser - Software you use to view and navigate web pages. The current popular browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape.

Banner Ad - One of the primary methods of advertising on the internet. They are usually small graphics with a very brief advertising message.

CGI - Common Gateway Interface - A set of rules that describe how a web server communicates with another piece of software on the same machine, and how the other piece of software talks to the web server. Usually, a CGI program is a small routine that takes data from a web server and does something with it, like putting the content of a form into an e-mail message, or turning the data into a database query.

CGI Scripts - Programs that run on a web server, in response to input from a browser. CGI scripts link the server and a program running on the system. For example, CGI scripts are used with interactive forms.

Chat Room - A real-time electronic forum. This is a virtual room where visitors can type messages to multiple people and share ideas on a particular subject - all in real-time.

Database - A computer program that allows you to store large amounts of information in a logical, ordered fashion for efficient retrieval.

Domain Name - The registered name that identifies an internet site (i.e. www.TCWebDesigns.com). The three-letter suffix identifies the type of organization. For instance, a domain name ending with .com is a commercial website. Other suffixes include .net (internet), .org (non-profit organization), .edu (educational), .gov (government), .mil (military) and .int (international), .info (informational), .us (United States), .ws (website), .biz (Business).  There are MANY other extensions besides the ones listed here.

Domain Name Registration - Most web developers will offer to register your chosen domain name for you. You can choose to register your domain name directly through InterNIC or another service such as Register.com. These are generally more expensive than Registrars such as Godaddy or DotEasy. Many organizations now offer these services with better customer service.

E-commerce / Ecommerce - The selling of goods or services via the internet. There are so many differences between traditional retail store design and ecommerce that you should definitely hire a professional to create an effective ecommerce solution for you.

Flash / Flash Animation - A bandwidth friendly and browser independent vector-graphic animation technology. As long as different browsers are equipped with the necessary plug-ins, Flash animations will look the same.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol
A method to upload and download files over the internet. You would use an FTP client (program) to upload your web pages and images from your computer to your hosting company's web server.

GIF - Graphic Interchange Format - An image file format used in web pages. This format compresses large image files into smaller sizes that are more manageable and load more quickly on the web.

Guest Book - A guest book allows visitors to give you their contact information (e.g. name, e-mail or postal address, telephone number, business). You might want to gather this information to send e-mail and monthly newsletters or simply to collect marketing information about your customers.

Home Page - The main page of a website. The home page usually provides links to other web pages on the site.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language - The language used to display web pages. HTML is used to format text and graphics and create hyperlinks from one page to another.

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol - A standard method of transferring data between a web server and a web browser.

Hyperlinks / Links - Words, blocks of text, or images on web pages that take you to another page when you click on them. Internal links take you somewhere else on the same website. External links take you to a different website.

Interactive Web Design - Web development that goes beyond graphic design. Interactive design refers to elements in the design that allow your users to interact with a database of information to quickly sort, query, or otherwise manipulate the data to find the information they need. Examples are questionnaires, surveys, shopping carts, online publishing, pricing calculators, a calendar of events, etc.

Internet - The network of computers that is inter-connected around the world.

IP Number - Internet Protocol Number - Every computer on the internet has a unique IP number. The number consists of four parts separated by dots (i.e. 209.219.128.158). Your internet service provider will tell you what number represents your web site. Your domain name is associated with your unique IP number to make it easier for people to remember.

ISP - Internet Service Provider - A company that provides internet access by dialup, DSL, cable, broadband tower, or satellite communication between your computer modem and the backbone of the internet.

Keywords / Keyphrases - Words that are used by search engines to define a web site and make it possible to give meaningful results when people search on those terms. Keywords are an essential part of the research when preparing to market your site.

Meta Tags/Metatags - Parts of your HTML code. They tell search engines about the content and purpose of your website and help search engines categorize your site correctly in the databases. See our tips on How to Use Metatags.

Search Engines - Databases of web sites that use spiders or robots to search the web and catalog web pages and make it convenient for you to search. Popular search engines include Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Infoseek, Lycos, Altavista, Excite, and Hotbot.

Secure Web Site - A website that uses encryption to scramble sensitive information submitted online and prevents unauthorized people from reading it if they intercept the transmission.

Server - A computer that contains your web pages and makes them available (serves them) on the internet. The term can also refer to software such as Microsoft Internet Information Server, which is called a web server.

Shopping Cart - E-commerce shopping carts manage your inventory and help visitors buy your products online, just like a shopper in a grocery store uses a cart to hold purchases while they continue shopping.

Spam - Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail. For more specific information about SPAM, please go to http://www.FTC.gov/spam

Spider - An automated program sent out by search engines to crawl along links it finds on the internet to create a comprehensive index of websites. All search engine optimization is designed to fit the complex rules used by the spiders to index sites.

SSL / Secure Socket Layer - Secure Socket Layer is a program that uses strong encryption to send sensitive information across the internet. Only a properly configured server and browser can conduct SSL transactions. This is the technology that protects your credit card or other private information when you purchase a product online.

SQL / Structured Query Language - a standard computer language for communicating with a relational database.

SQL Server - Microsoft's enterprise caliber relational database product. SQL server is a good database choice to run dynamic web sites.

Unix - The name of a group of server operating platforms from Sun, RedHat, HP, and others.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator An internet address which tells a browser where to find an internet resource. For instance, our URL at TC Designs is http://www.TCWebDesigns.com

Video streaming - Video streaming provides your visitors with video images such as movie trailers, speeches, etc.

Web Designer - A person or company that creates the graphic look and feel of a web site. Often this is not enough to create a successful e-commerce site. More and more, smart companies are going beyond mere web design to find sophisticated solutions from advanced, interactive web developers. As customers become more demanding, online companies are feeling the need to do more to keep customers happy and loyal.

Web Developer - A person or company, like TC Web Designs, that creates interactive features to inform and motivate your visitors on the web. We take great care to develop web applications that fulfill all the elements of a successful e-business.
